Often tragic events that happen worldwide cause us to feel sad or overwhelmed. But I am sure that you will agree that the people of Japan are feeling tragedy at a whole new level. If you are experiencing overwhelming feelings of grief or fear, please consider using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). For those of you who are not familiar with EFT, it is an easy to learn method that uses tapping on acupressure points and gentle conversation to eliminate negative emotions. For a five step guide on how to do EFT, please go to my website: http://www.tahoehealthtouch.com/emotional.html#tappoints

Here are some “set-up” sentences that can help balance your energies and help you to send out positive intentions to the people of Japan.

“Even though I am overwhelmed with sadness about the events in Japan, I am sending healing energy with every breath to the people of Japan”

“Even though I can’t believe this has happened, I am sending loving compassion to everyone who has been affected by these events”

“Even though I am afraid of what will happen to the nuclear reactors in Japan, I strongly hold the thought that this situation is being brought into control”

Gary Craig, founder of EFT, has suggested that we try to tap several rounds every hour until the crisis has past. For those of you who use EFT, you are well aware of how this tapping will calm you and give you a more positive outlook. I urge everyone to give it a try.

Blessings,

Rosemary Manning

Did you notice today that the TV news anchors were wearing red? It is to highlight the need for women to learn about the symptoms of heart attack and to call 911 if they feel they are having a heart attack. But it seems that it will take a lot more than just wearing a red dress or a red tie to remind women, first that they might be having a heart attack, and second, they should call 911. Yesterday in USA Today, writer, Anita Manning, wrote about a newly launched health campaign called, “Make the Call, Don’t Miss a Beat” to remind women to call 911 if they feel like they are having a heart attack. One of the surveys Ms. Manning quoted said that “women don’t know if they are having a heart attack”. OK, that might be true, but I believe that there is often another underlining reason women don’t call 911. Simply put – they don’t feel like they deserve it. They feel like they are inconveniencing someone if they need help. God forbid they need to ask someone for something. I teach an empowerment tool called Emotional Freedom Technique and about 90% of my students are women. I can guarantee that this theme will come up in the workshop – women don’t think they are enough. No matter what they do, they aren’t pretty enough, thin enough, smart enough…just not enough. So it will take much more than just wearing red to remind women that their health is important and they deserve to get help. It takes daily reminders, maybe even hourly reminders that we, as women, are worth it.

As I make my way through the muck and mire of using social networking to promote my business, I keep reading that I need to “find my niche”. Not only am I not quite sure what my “niche” is, I just found out that I have been pronouncing it wrong. I thought niche rhymed with itch. But now it seems, it rhymes with quiche. When did this happen? How did this happen? Is this new pronunciation part of this social networking genre? Give an old term a face lift, make it more modern. Whatever. I help people feel better and do better with a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique. It works, its awesome. But the professional bloggers insist that I find my niche. I am working on it and when I find it, I will write about it. In the meantime, does anyone know when and why we changed the pronunication of niche? Until next time: heal….change…..create.

Another swim this morning and thinking that just writing about the swim would be boring. But, thank goodness, something funny happened. I will be wearing a pair of water shoes after the swim when I run up to the transition area at Harvey’s. The water shoes don’t have much support for my feet so yesterday I bought some of those inserts that you cut to size and put into your shoes. This morning was the first time that I ran with the inserts. They felt great! Running back to the car I noticed that there were little spots of something that looked like whipped cream on the street where I was running. Weird, but I didn’t think anything about it. But when I got back to the car I looked down and my shoes were foaming! Lots of white foam bubbling out from my toes. What was that? Maybe it is something they put in the inserts to help reduce odor that gets activated with water. Who knows. But when I thought about getting foam inserts, bubbling foam was not what I meant. So today I had mad dog feet! Until next time,

It is 7:30am and I am at Lakeside Beach. It is calm and extremely cold. I do my swim and when I get out of the water, I run up the beach to where I can lean against a bench to clean the sand off my feet and put on my water shoes. The sand has frost on it, so when I run with freezing cold feet, it feels like someone has tried to exfoliate the bottoms of my feet with 60 grit sandpaper. But here is a bit of good news – a great reason for being over 50 years old. If you have been reading my posts, you know that I am most concerned about the swimming event and getting finished in the 30 minute time allotment. Well, we begin in waves, according to your age group. The oldest group, 50-59 years old (my age group) begins first and then each wave starts five minutes later, six waves in all. They don’t start the time clock until the last wave begins. Do you know what that means? I get an additional 25 minutes to swim before the clock even begins. I am a happy Iron Girl! Until next time,

OK, I promised that these blogs wouldn’t be too informational, just fun. But I noticed a tension in my left IT band while training on this week and it reminded me that I hadn’t used my foam roller for about a week. So this is an informational blog and it is about foam rollers. The foam roller is a firm foam log that is six inches in diameter. I use the roller against the muscle knots with my own body weight to generate direct pressure. Imagine using a rolling pin to roll out lumps in bread dough. As a massage therapist, I know that one of the best ways to address a muscle knot is with direct pressure .Using the foam roller hurts, but I only use it for a couple of minutes at a time and it really works. I use the foam roller to work out the front and back of my thighs, my gluts and my worse area, the outside of the thigh known as the IT band. It takes a bit of practice, but it is worth it. You start by finding an open area with some floor space. You position your body with the area you want to work on top of the foam roller. Your body weight creates the pressure that massages and releases tight areas in the fascia, muscles and tendons. You control the pressure by applying more or less body weight on the foam roller and using your hands and feet to offset your weight as needed. Want to learn more about foam rollers? Go to: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/flexibilityandstretching/ss/FoamRoller_2.htm.

Of course, before using a foam roller, be sure to check with your doctor. Until next time,

When you change from one sport to another sport in a triathlon, it is referred to as “a transition”. So when I first decided to register for the Iron Girl, I figured how hard can it be to change from biking shoes to running shoes? Ahh, how naïve I was! There is a lot to a transition. If fact, when I first read about how to do a transition on the Iron Girl website, I got a stomachache. The first sentence on the Iron Girl website under the heading, “Aflac Iron Girl Triathlon Transition Area Set-Up is: “Setting up a transition area can be very stressful for participants.” That should have been a clue. Three pages explaining how to set up and use the transition area. For example, you only have the small space for your towel behind your bike, which is racked, for setting up your stuff and getting ready. How to set up your shoes, which direction your helmet should be placed, how to set out your sunglasses. OK, I get it – there will be women who are very serious about this event and I will give them lots of room. Not any room on my small transition towel, but my hat is off to them. On the other hand, I want to experience it all, so I am going to set out my shoes, helmet, sunglasses, etc. just like they have suggested.

They also suggest that you do a couple of practice transitions to get the bugs out. I did one this past weekend and, honestly, it went pretty good. I kept everything in my car and did my transitions from the back seat. I did the entire event on the course and yes, there are a few bugs, but nothing that cannot be easily taken care of. I am a superstitious person, so I won’t tell you what my times were, but I am pleased. That just means that I probably won’t be the last to finish and I won’t throw up at the finish line. Two weeks until the event. Until next time,

The other day my youngest daughter, Briana, and I went for a training swim at Lakeside Beach(both of my daughters are doing the Iron Girl). This is where the Iron Girl swim will actually take place. We both parked at the Lakeside Beach parking lot and I walked over to Briana’s car.

Me: Hi Bri. Ready to go?

Briana: Hi mom. Why do you have duct tape over your ears?

Me: It holds my earplugs in

Bri: Mom (you know the tone – a little sympathy, a little “you are kinda weird”), why don’t you get a swimming cap?

Me: Good idea. Where do I get one in Tahoe?

Bri: Mom, (same tone, little more sympathy) you can get one at the Recreation Complex.

Me: Cool, I will get one today

We had a great swim. The water at Lakeside is warmer and deeper than where I was originally training. I am still doing a breast stroke, side stroke combo.

Bri: Mom, (lots of sympathy), why are you wearing goggles? You don’t even put your face in the water.

Me: Yeah, but who does a triathlon without wearing goggles?

Bri: OK, mom, you look great.

Until next time, Iron Crone

I experienced a partial tear of the ACL of my right knee this past season while skiing. Running isn’t the best form of exercise with an ACL tear, but I wanted to rehab myself and get back into running anyway (my family would now remind me of a slight stubborn streak I sometimes exhibit). I started getting acupunture. But, honestly, the needles really hurt and I am a wus. Fortunately, my acupunturist, Gina Wyneken-Soares, is trained in many modalities. And she didn’t think I was a wus, but rather a “delicate flower”. So she began using Acutonics on this delicate flower. Instead of using needles, Acutonics uses vibrational sound healing with tuning forks, Tibetan bowls, bells, drums and rattles. Too weird for you? Not to worry – Gina just uses the tuning forks and boy, does it work. She bonks those tuning forks on her wrists to get them vibrating, then she sets them on the acupoints for my knee and I am in heaven. And guess what? Since we have been using the tuning forks, I have had no pain in my knee. So, if you have ever considered getting acupunture, but you are creeped out thinking about the needles, give Acutonics a try. Here is a plug for Gina – she is located at Elevate Wellness and she can be reached at 541-9355. Until next time,

It’s never been baggy on me – it is tight and shows every lump and bump. So let’s take cycling shorts. They are tight and they have a chamois in the area where you sit on the saddle. You are glad for the padding, but when you walk it feels like you are wearing a huge, full diaper. Uhmmm.. so what do you wear when you have to swim, ride, bike and you don’t want to take the time to change your clothes in front of everyone? Enter: tri-shorts. Yeah, they are still tight, but the chamois is small, like a tiny full diaper, and you can run in them. OK, this is good. I now have a pair of tri-shorts and I am very happy with them.
